AI automation of product names: implementation and good naming guidelines
Product name AI automation completes missing product names based on product data and your own naming guidelines. In this guide, you define a common naming convention, select the required product data, and review the results.

How AI product name automation works
AI product name automation generates missing names based on product data and the store’s naming instructions. It helps maintain consistent naming, but does not overwrite existing names or act as a bulk editing tool for old product names. New names are saved to products automatically, rather than placed in a separate approval queue.
During setup, first define the naming instructions that apply to all products and the name length limits. Use the attribute family settings to specify which product data may be used for naming and how many values a product must have. Once the settings are ready, enable the automation and check the generated names on the products. Channel-specific naming is covered in a separate guide: Channel-specific product names: automation, custom names and inheritance.
Names are generated in the store’s default data language. Switching the admin panel to Finnish does not change the language used to generate names. Make sure product classifications and the attribute values used for naming are correct before enabling the automation.
Open the settings under AI Automations → Product Names. In the Automatic Product Naming section, check the feature’s status and the displayed language. The ? next to a field opens additional guidance.
Shared naming instructions and product name length
The shared product naming instructions define the principles that apply to all products. Enter them in the General Naming Policy field in the Store-specific Naming Instructions section. Each instruction can contain up to 1,000 characters; any excess is truncated. After making a change, wait for the Saved status.
For example, the following instructions describe the desired name structure and how product data should be used:
Start with the product type. Then add the product’s distinguishing features and their units. Use consistent terminology. Avoid promotional slogans and repetition. Do not infer missing technical specifications.
Keep the shared instructions short. Add details for a particular product group to the attribute family instructions so that the shared instructions do not contain details that are unsuitable for other products.
Set product name length limits in the Name Validation section using the Minimum Character Count and Maximum Character Count fields. The limits must be within 20–200 characters, and the minimum must not exceed the maximum. Spaces count towards the length.
Choose limits based on actual product data. An unnecessarily high minimum length makes it harder to generate a short, clear name. Allow room for the product’s key distinguishing features. If the generated name is already used by another product on the same channel and in the same language, the system may append the product ID. This distinguishing suffix may exceed the selected maximum length.
Attribute family naming model and required product data
The attribute family naming model refines how names are generated for products in that family. If Attribute Family Naming Model appears in the settings, select an Attribute Family. This loads the instructions and settings for that specific family. Add the data relevant to naming to Allowed Attributes and set the Minimum Number of Values.
For example, three populated values may be required from five allowed attributes. This is a count of the selected attributes, not the product’s overall PIM completeness percentage. If the threshold is not met, the product is not named. This additional threshold does not apply unless a family-specific rule has been saved.
Enter the family-specific details in the Attribute Family Instructions field, for example: “For pressure sensors, include the pressure range and output signal when they are available in the product data.” The instructions can contain up to 1,000 characters. The order of attributes on the screen does not determine the word order in the name.
There is no separate category-specific naming model. Categories help establish the product’s context and the style of existing names.
Enabling AI automation and checking results
Enable AI product name automation only after checking the naming instructions, length limits and required product data. Then turn on Enable Product Name Automation. Settings are saved automatically. Make sure no save error remains on the screen.
Eligible missing names are processed in the background. You do not need to stay on the page while waiting for results. Changing the instructions later affects future missing names, not names that have already been saved.
Monitor the naming results under Last Run and Successful Names This Month. Also open products that have been named and check that their names describe the correct products, include the necessary features and follow the intended style.
Shared names and channel-specific names use the same usage quota. Failed naming attempts do not count as successful names. If future names need refinement, edit the naming instructions; this does not change names that have already been saved.
Troubleshooting a missing product name
If AI product name automation does not generate a name for a product, check the product’s naming conditions in the following order. An existing name, the wrong data language, too few attribute values or an exhausted quota can prevent a new name from being generated.
- Check that automation is enabled and that the product’s shared name is missing, or that no custom name has been saved for the enabled channel. An inherited shared name does not prevent automatic generation of a channel name.
- Check the store’s default data language: the automation does not populate every language version.
- Check the family’s allowed attributes and the minimum number of populated values.
- Check that the naming instructions and length limits are compatible, and check the available quota.
- A product that has failed is not retried indefinitely. If necessary, correct the product’s shared name in the store’s default data language in the product view. Editing only attributes or the channel name does not clear this failure state.
If you need help, provide support with the product ID, the target language and channel if applicable, the settings used and the visible error message. Do not send passwords or API keys.
