How do I add URLs to a custom sitemap?
Add and manage your own sitemap URLs in the Control Panel to help your important pages be found in search engines without any development work.
Custom sitemap URLs
A custom sitemap supplements the sitemap generated by an online store with URLs that are not covered by automatic product, category, or content listings. It can be used to notify search engines, for example, of a published campaign or landing page without changing the code. The annotation does not guarantee indexing, but makes the address discoverable by search engines via the sitemap.
Add a URL to a custom sitemap
Custom sitemap URLs are added in the Custom Sitemap view under the path /seo/sitemap . Select New URL and fill in the fields in the window that opens:
- Language : select the language of the store whose sitemap the address belongs to.
-
URL : enter the absolute address of the published page, for example
https://kauppa.example/fi/kampanja. - Enabled : leave the option enabled if the address must be entered in the generated sitemap.
Select Add URL . AI Commerce will reject the same language and exact URL combination twice. The URL must be 512 characters or less and the language must be one of the store's defined languages.
Choose the language and address correctly
The custom sitemap language selection limits the entry to the sitemap for that language version. Add separate entries for pages in different languages and select the correct store language for each. The same URL can technically appear in different languages, but only use it if the same page truly belongs in both language versions.
Provide an HTTPS address that corresponds primarily to the store's own canonical page. Before saving, make sure that the page opens without logging in, returns a successful response, and does not redirect to an outdated or different language page. The current server only checks the address to ensure that the value is not empty or longer than 512 characters; it does not verify the protocol, domain, or the existence of the page.
Edit URL or usage status
To edit a custom sitemap entry, open the row's action menu and select Edit . You can change the language, URL, and Enabled status. Finally, select Save Changes .
When the campaign ends but you want to keep the entry for later use, change its status to Inactive . The inactive row will remain in the admin but will not be written to the sitemap generated by the online store. When the page permanently moves to a new address, update the entry and ensure the online store redirection separately.
Remove URL
To delete a custom sitemap URL, select Delete from the row's action menu and confirm Delete URL . The deletion is permanent. Use deletion when the URL is no longer needed; use Inactive if the same campaign or content can be re-enabled later.
After deletion, the address will no longer appear in the next generated sitemap from the custom entries. If the same address is generated in the sitemap from a product, category, or other automated content, deleting this custom row will not remove the automated entry.
Check the change in the online store sitemap
The markup used in the custom sitemap is read when generating the sitemap for the online store. Successful saving by the admin makes the row immediately available for the next sitemap request, but the search engine index is not updated immediately. The search engine decides itself when to read the sitemap and index the page.
After saving, check the public sitemap for the correct language version and find the exact URL you added. Also, make sure that the page opens for the customer and that its canonical URL matches the address in the sitemap. When you change the row to Disabled or delete it, check accordingly that the custom markup no longer appears in the next sitemap response.
Use a custom sitemap for supplemental purposes only
A custom sitemap does not replace the automatic sitemap of the online store, but its active rows are added alongside other content. Manually add only published and customer-visible pages that would otherwise not be included. Do not add search results, pages requiring login, outdated campaigns, or multiple URL formats of the same content.
Keep the list clean by checking your campaign URLs regularly. When the content changes but the URL remains the same, there is no need to change the entry. When the language or address changes, update the row and check the public sitemap again. This way, the sitemap will automatically populate the content without unnecessary, broken, or competing URLs.
