Tracking discount coupon usage

The Discount Coupons report shows coupons attached to orders during a selected period and organizes them by usage. The report allows you to identify frequently used promotional codes and check the discount amount recorded on their order lines. The profitability of the campaign should be assessed in conjunction with sales and margin.

Run the Discount Coupons report

The Discount Coupons report can be found in the Reports view of the Dashboard.

  1. Open Reports and find Discount Coupons .
  2. Select Run Report .
  3. Set the date range. The default is the last 30 days.
  4. Check the result in the Preview tab or open Export and select Download CSV .

The preview may only show a subset of rows. Use CSV export to analyze coupon performance for the entire selected period. The report will only show coupons that are associated with at least one order in the selected period.

Read the coupon summary line

Each row in the Coupons report represents one coupon. The columns are:

  • Coupon code : unique code for the coupon.
  • Description : The description stored for the coupon.
  • Discount value : the discount value stored on the coupon.
  • Discount method : fixed amount, percentage, or shipping discount.
  • Total available : The redemption limit set for the coupon by all customers. A value of 0 means unlimited use.
  • Usages : The number of unique orders in the selected time period to which the coupon was attached.
  • Calculated remaining : usage limit minus usages for the selected period. For unlimited coupons, the value is blank.
  • Total Discounts : DiscountCoupon amount for selected orders.
  • First Used and Last Used : the purchase dates of the first and last subscriptions for the selected period.

The rows are arranged by usage from highest to lowest and, in the event of a tie, by coupon code.

Do not interpret the remaining value as an overall balance.

The Calculated Remaining column in the Coupons report only subtracts the coupon usages from the total limit for the selected reporting period. If the coupon has also been used before or after the period, the column will not reflect the actual total remaining for the coupon.

Check the coupon's current Total Available and Total Actual Usage in the Coupons view before continuing the campaign or creating a new code. Don't decide to extend based solely on the calculated Remaining value in the report.

Evaluate campaign performance

The usages in the Discount Coupons report indicate the popularity of the code in the selected period, not the profitability of the campaign.

  • Compare usage to campaign reach and order volume.
  • In addition to discounts, check order sales, margin, returns, and share of new customers.
  • Compare the campaign to a similar period without a campaign or to a controlled comparison group.
  • Check coupon-specific targeting, restrictions, validity, and customer-specific usage limit before making a conclusion.

Limit the interpretation of monetary amounts

The Discount Coupons report does not break out the currency and does not apply the order thresholds accepted in the actual sales report. Therefore, the usages and discount amount may include orders that should not be treated as completed sales.

The stored value for percentage and shipping discount is in the database as a fraction, but the report returns it as a display percentage without converting it. For example, a stored value of 0.10 means 10 percent in coupon management. Use the Discount Coupons view to review campaign settings and use the approved sales and margin reporting for financial evaluation.
