Identify at what point the reset stops
Troubleshooting password reset email delivery issues starts with separating the request, email delivery, and link usage. Password reset only works for registered customer accounts. Guest accounts do not have a resettable account found by this query because the account search excludes temporary_customer records.
Ask the customer for their email address via a secure support channel and check the event time, store domain, and the error message displayed. Do not ask for the current or new password. Also, do not send or copy the reset link to the ticket.
Check your email address and customer account
To resolve password reset email sending issues, first check the format of the email address and then check for the existence of a registered account. The Storefront action is Forgot your password? . If no account is found, the current message is Email address not registered. Please register or continue as guest.
Verify spelling, possible alternate email address, and whether the previous order was made as a guest. If the customer used an external login or an organization's identity service, confirm separately whether local password reset is included in that login method.
Check bot protection
Resolving password reset message sending issues also takes into account bot protection. Account activity validation checks for bot traps: if a hidden field is filled, the request requires a successful reCAPTCHA check or returns an error.
Try in a clean browser session without autofill or content editing plugins. Do not disable bot protection to work around the issue. If the error persists, record the request ID and error code without logging the email or token.
Ensure message sending and delivery
The system sends the reset email only after the address and account have been approved. The system will generate a random token, store it in the customer account with an expiration time of one hour, and send a link to the account email address.
The absence of a first name does not prevent sending: the recipient's name is derived from the local part of the email address if necessary. If the application returns success but the message does not appear, check spam, delay, sending service status, rejection, and the store's email settings. The application's success response alone does not prove that the recipient received the message.
Use the reset link within one hour.
To resolve password reset message sending issues, check the link token and expiration time. The link opens /profile/password?token=… and is valid for 1 hour. An expired or unknown token will not establish a reset session.
Please make a new request if the link has expired. Use the most recent message, as the new request will save a new token to the account. Do not edit the token in the address bar or use a link created for another store.
If the browser displays a login or error page instead of a password change form, don't keep guessing: make a new request on the real store's storefront and open the link from the same message in full.
Set a new password
Resolving password reset message sending issues ends with validating the new password. The password must be at least 8 characters long, contain at least one uppercase letter, one lowercase letter, and one number. The confirmation must match.
A successful password reset saves the new password, clears the reset token, and deletes the reset session. The account does not need to have a previously set local password for the forgot path to create a link based on the registered email address; whether password reset is supported for external identity providers must still be confirmed.
Make a limited support diagnosis
Resolving password reset message sending issues can be narrowed down to this:
- Error before success: check email format, registered account, and bot protection.
- Success without a message: check the email service for acceptance, delivery, rejection, and the recipient’s spam folder.
- Link does not open: check the store domain, token integrity, latest request, and the one-hour validity period.
- The new password will be rejected: check the minimum length of 8 characters, upper/lower case, number and confirmation.
- The problem remains: escalate request ID, time, store, error code, and delivery service events without secrets.
Do not manually create a password for the customer or send the password via email. Fix the actual failure in the reset path or direct the customer to an approved identity service recovery process.
