Channel-specific product names: automation, own name, and inheritance
With a channel-specific product name, you can maintain a name that is suitable for different uses without changing the common name of the product catalog. In this guide, you will define the channel naming method and check or edit the channel name for an individual product.
How channel-specific product names work
Channel-specific product names are suitable for situations where the same naming convention does not serve all purposes. Use a common name when it is sufficient, and only define a channel-specific naming convention for a real need, for example, for a more concise technical name than usual.
The canonical name refers to the common name of the product in the selected information language. If a channel does not have its own name stored, it inherits this common name. The channel name can differ from the common name, even if the common name is already filled in. You can automatically create missing channel names or enter the product's channel name yourself. In both cases, the product's common name remains unchanged.
Naming a channel, for example, ERP, does not in itself enable ERP integration. Please ensure that the desired release or integration uses channel-specific names. This action alone does not change the use of online store names or product addresses.

Channel naming options and automatic creation
You can access the channel naming settings under AI Automations → Product Names → Channel-specific names . Select an existing channel in the Channel field. Default · canonical name means a common name, not a separate channel-specific override.
Changing the channel loads the settings of the selected channel. Editing the settings does not create a new channel.
If necessary, add Channel Guide . It complements the store-specific and attribute family guide, and is applied after them. The maximum length is 1,000 characters ; excess parts are truncated.
Example of a channel that needs a technical name:
Use a concise technical name. Start with the product type and add the most important distinguishing technical values with units. Avoid advertising slogans. Do not add information that is not included in the product documentation.
Leave the Minimum characters and Maximum characters blank if the channel uses shared limits. You can also specify only one limit. The combination you use must be between 20 and 200 characters , and the minimum cannot exceed the maximum. Wait for the status Saved .
If the name is already in use on the same channel and language, the product ID to be added to the end may exceed the selected maximum length.
Turn on Create missing channel names if you want automation to generate custom names for this channel. The common Enable product name automation switch must also be on.
Automation only fills in missing channel names in the store's default data language. An already saved channel name will remain, regardless of whether it was manually entered or automatically generated. Common and channel-specific names consume the same quota.
If you want the channel to continue to inherit the common name, leave automatic channel creation turned off and do not save a custom name for it.
Product channel name editing and inheritance
Editing a product's channel name is done on the Descriptions tab of the desired product. In the Channel-specific product name section, select Channel and Name language .
- The saved channel name is a unique name saved only for this product, channel, and language.
- The channel name to be used will show the saved name or, if there is no own name, the common name.
- Inherited from canonical name indicates that the channel uses a common name.
If necessary, enter your own name in the Saved channel name field. The change is saved automatically. Check the name you want to use after saving. The change does not change the common name of other channels, other languages, or the product.
Automatic creation and manual editing are different operations: manually you can maintain the channel name in the data language of your choice, although automation only creates names in the default data language.
Clear the Saved Channel Name for the product and allow the change to save. The channel-specific override will be removed, and the Channel Name to Use will revert to the common name for the selected language.
Note: If automatic channel creation is still enabled, automation may later repopulate the newly cleared channel name. Clearing is not a product-specific automation disabler. Disabling channel automation applies to the entire channel.
Recommendations and revisions for channel name usage
It is worth checking the channel name settings and manual changes together: the automation instructions determine the naming method for future missing names, but the already saved custom name will remain. Therefore, make sure of both the desired naming method and the name used on the product.
- Keep the common naming convention as the primary guideline and only write the necessary differences in the channel guideline.
- Use common length limits unless the channel has a justified requirement of its own.
- Always check the channel and information language before making a manual change.
- Do not clear names just to try a new instruction: clearing may trigger new automatic naming.
- If the save fails, use the visible retry and check the result before moving on.
