Group discounts: give a group of customers a product-specific discount
Create a permanent percentage discount for a combination of product group and customer group that will automatically appear in the online store to the right customers.
How discounts for specific customer groups work
A group discount combines a product discount group, a Matrix-type customer group, and a percentage discount. Online store pricing can use a rule when the logged-in customer's group code and the product's group discount value exactly match the rule.
A group discount is not a coupon or a timed campaign. It is valid as long as the rule line exists and its subscription values match the product and customer.
Group discounts: give a group of customers a product-specific discount
Group Discounts gives a named Matrix customer group a percentage discount on all products whose Group Discount value matches the Product Group code in the rule. Each rule contains one product group, one customer group, and a discount percentage. The same exact pair can only be saved once, but you can create your own rules for different product groups and customer groups.
The Product Group in the table does not refer to the store category. It is the group discount subscription code used in product pricing. The rule does not add a code to products or customers, but both must be defined separately in their own data.
For example, when the Product Group of a group discount is Tarvikkeet , only products with a Group Discount value of exactly Tarvikkeet are included in the rule. The customer must also belong to the Matrix customer group named in the rule.
Open Group discounts
Group discounts are opened from the Pricing workspace.
- Open Pricing > Group discounts .
- Check the table columns ID , Product Group , Customer Group , and Discount % .
- If necessary, load more rows or change the number of rows displayed on the page.
- Open an existing rule by selecting its row, or select New Group Discount to start a new one.
The address for group discounts is /pricing/discount-groups . The new rule opens at /pricing/discount-groups/new .
The list ID is the rule record ID. However, the pricing party affiliation is based on the Product Group and Customer Group values, not this ID.
Prepare the products and customer group
Prepare the products and customer group before saving a new group discount.
- Assign a specific code to the product group, up to 50 characters.
- In the product pricing information, select this value in the Group discount field.
- Make sure that customers belong to the correct Matrix type customer group.
- Record the exact customer group code for the rule.
The font style and font size are important. Changing the group discount code does not automatically update the product information or customer group.
In the control panel, the basic information for the Matrix customer group is read-only. Group discounts can be created and edited, but creating a missing Matrix group or changing its code is not possible in this workspace.
Create a new group discount
Create a new group discount using the separate Save function.
- Select New group discount .
- In the Product Group field, enter the exact code for the product's Group Discount value.
- In the Customer Group field, select the named Matrix customer group.
- Enter a Discount % between 0 and 100.
- Select Save .
The discount percentage is stored with two decimal places. A value of 0 is allowed, but it does not change the price.
Do not select Any Customer Group . The selection is visible in the user interface, but the storage service requires a named customer group, and Matrix pricing for the online store does not handle an empty group code as a general rule.
If the same Product Group–Customer Group combination already exists, the save will be rejected. Open the existing rule and edit it instead of creating a new parallel rule.
Example: 20 percent for the retailer
For example, a retailer's 20 percent group discount can be defined like this:
-
Product category:
Tarvikkeet -
Customer group:
jalleenmyyjat -
Discount %:
20
Associate the products that fall under the rule by selecting their pricing Group Discount value Tarvikkeet . Associate the test customer with the Matrix customer group coded jalleenmyyjat .
If the base price of a product is €100.00, the 20 percent rule results in a price of €80.00 before other pricing and tax presentation are processed. Similarly, a 15 percent discount results in a price of €85.00 from €100.00.
Always check the final price in the online store with a test customer, as other pricing rules can produce their own price candidates.
Edit group discount
Edit a group discount on its details page; the change is automatically saved when you leave the field.
- Open the rule from the Group Discounts table.
- Change the Product Group, Customer Group, or Discount % field.
- Leave the field and wait for the autosave to complete.
- Check the online store price with the right product and customer.
The change will start targeting the rule to the new exact combination. It will not move products to another group discount or change the customers' group membership.
A Save button is used when creating a new rule, but there is no separate Save button on the existing rule details page. Do not leave the page until the field save is complete.
Remove group discount
Deleting a group discount is done using the Delete function on the details page.
The deletion occurs directly without a separate confirmation window. The user interface also does not show how many products or customers are affected by the rule.
Before removal, check at least:
- the rule's Product Group and Customer Group codes
- products using the rule
- customers belonging to the group
- possible replacement pricing
- The price visible to the customer after the discount.
The deletion does not clear the product's Group Discount value or any other customer group. It only removes the percentage rule from this combination.
Check the impact on the online store
Check the effect of the group discount in the online store with a test customer belonging to the correct Matrix customer group.
- Select a product whose Group Discount value matches the Product Group code in the rule.
- Log in to the online store as an eligible customer.
- Check the price on the product listing, product page, shopping cart, and order line.
- Compare the price to the base price and the calculated percentage.
- Test another customer group and a product with a different Group Discount value.
A group discount produces a single price candidate. The final price can be affected by, for example, customer prices and volume discounts, so the rule line in the Control Panel alone does not determine the final price that the customer sees.
A new product associated with the same Group Discount value is included in the rule without creating a new rule line. However, the product is not included in the rule based on category alone.
Good to know
Good to know about Group Discounts before widespread implementation:

- Product group refers to the product's Group Discount value, not the store category.
- Codes can be up to 50 characters long.
- The discount percentage can be 0–100 and is stored with two decimal places.
- The same Product Group–Customer Group combination is only allowed once.
- Do not use the Any customer group option.
- A new rule is saved with the button; an existing rule is automatically saved.
- The deletion occurs without confirmation or preview of the effect.
- Check the final price with the real customer and product in the online store.
