Storage locations: manage bin and shelf locations
In the Locations register, you define the warehouse's bin and shelf locations, which help you find products quickly and ensure order picking runs smoothly.
Purpose of storage locations in picking
Warehouse locations are an internal register for warehouse bin and shelf locations. Each location has a Bin Location , Bin Size , and a manual usage tag. The product is attached to the location in the product's own editor.
Browse storage locations
Open Warehouse Locations at /products/locations . The list shows the location ID, bin location, size, usage label, number of products attached to the location, and available functions.
The list uses cursor-based pagination. The number of products helps to assess the impact of the change, but it is not possible to open a separate summary of all products using the location from the list.
The " Bindings in use " switch on the page is a store-wide setting. Changes to this switch are saved automatically. The switch does not replace the manual use marking of individual storage locations.
Why use storage spaces?
Bin locations speed up picking as the product's bin code is visible when processing an order line, eliminating the need to search for the product on the shelves. Consistent codes reduce the risk of picking the wrong product and make it easier for new employees to learn.
A common register helps keep locations consistent as the warehouse grows. Product quantity and manual usage marking provide a limited snapshot of locations, but they are not an automatic capacity calculation: physical free space must be ensured by the warehouse's own operating methods.
Create a storage location
Select New Storage Location . Enter the Bin Location , Bin Size , and Usage Label. The bin location is required and has a maximum length of 11 characters. The size must be zero or a positive integer.
Select Save . The creation page will only save with the button and will open the new storage location editing page after success.
Use a consistent location code, for example a combination of shelf and bin. The registry does not prevent the same bin location text from being stored on multiple lines, so check before creating that the same location does not already exist.
Edit storage location
Edit a storage location by opening it from the list. Changes to the bin location , bin size , and usage label are automatically saved on the edit page. Exiting the text field starts the pending save immediately.
Wait for the save to complete before exiting the page. An invalid size or too long slot will display a field error. Other save errors will be displayed as a notification on the page.
The usage tag is manual information. It alone does not prove whether the bin is physically free, full, or occupied, so agree on a consistent way for your team to maintain it.
Associate the product with a storage location
Open the product and go to its Storage Location section. Enter the location code or select a suggestion from up to the first 100 locations in the register. The maximum length of the product location field is 30 characters, and the change is saved automatically.
The product field also accepts text that is not in the storage location register. Only a join with exactly the same location code will increase the product count in the register and form an identified match. If the same code is present in the register multiple times, the product editor will report multiple matches.
Location information is displayed in product details and in the picking information on order lines. The picking list PDF uses the location information stored on the order line, so keep your product and warehouse location information up to date before processing orders.
Delete storage location
Open the storage location and select Delete . The service prevents deletion if at least one product uses the same location code. Remove or change the location code of the products before attempting a new one.
Deletion is a permanent registry change. Deleting a location does not correct data stored on previous order lines, so also evaluate your history and integration needs before deleting.
If the deletion is blocked, first check the product's Storage Location section and change the products using the same location code to the new location intended. The register only shows the usage amount, so finding out extensive usage may require a product search or separate data extraction. Do not circumvent the block by renaming the row, as this would leave the old free text for the products.
Visibility in the online store
The visibility of the storage location in the online store is limited to the use of internal storage and picking information. The current product information online store service does not indicate that the register's bin location, size or usage marking would be displayed to the customer on the product page, in the shopping cart or at checkout.
Do not use the warehouse location as a setting for availability, price, or filtering that is visible to the customer. Verify the location used for picking separately with the actual order.
The product location code can still be passed to internal ordering and picking data. If your store theme, integration, or custom interface displays product information more broadly, ensure its own field mapping is separate before treating the location code as confidential information.
Good to know
In the Warehouse Locations register, a bin location is limited to 11 characters, but the product's own location field allows for 30 characters. The difference allows for text that does not belong in the register, so consistent codes and regular checking are important.
Lockers in use is a store-specific setting. Additionally, changing a product location can only mark a new location as in use if the separate server setting RESERVE_USED_LOCKERS is enabled; the user interface does not display the status of this setting.
The storage location edit and product location field are saved automatically. A new location is created by clicking the Save button.
