Product tags: check language-specific tags and their usage
The Product Tags view brings together all of your store's tags and their usage counts to help you keep your tags consistent and improve store search.
Product tag quality management by language
Product Tags gathers the values and usage rates of product tags used in the catalog by language. The view helps you find different spellings, rarely used tags, and products to which the tag is attached.
The summary page is read-only. Adding and removing tags is done in the Tags section of the product editor, where each data language has its own list of tags.
Browse product tags
Product tags open at /products/tags . The table contains Tag , Products , and Example Products . Products counts the different products that have exactly that tag value in the selected language. Examples show up to three products with the lowest product ID.
Tags are sorted alphabetically by tag value. Pagination at the bottom of the page shows the total count and provides page size and first, previous, and next page functions. The server accepts a maximum of 200 tag values in a single request.
Select the product code and name of the sample product to open its editor. If the tag is used by more than three products, the summary page will not show all usages directly. The tag name link attempts to open the product list with the tag parameter, but the current product list does not treat this parameter as a reliable delimiter; use the sample products and, if necessary, a CSV export of product tags for a comprehensive analysis.
Change tag language
Product tags show the options EN and FI in the Tag language selection. Changing the language will re-fetch the first page and calculate tag values, usage counts, and example product names from the rows in the selected language.
The same spelling in different languages has two different language-specific associations. The usage rate may also be different if the tag is added to only some of the product's languages. Check both languages of the selector separately before cleaning or naming.
In the product editor, the tag tabs are made up of all available data languages, but the language selector on the dashboard currently only offers English and Finnish. If there are other data languages in the store, their coverage cannot be inferred from this dashboard; use the language-specific CSV export or the product editor.
Unify tags in the product editor
Product tags do not modify values on the dashboard. Open the sample product and go to the Tags section of the product. Select the correct language tab, type one tag at a time, and add it using the Enter key or the plus button. Remove a tag using the delete button next to it.
The maximum length of a single tag is 500 characters. Empty values are ignored and the exact same value is only kept once in the same language list. However, keep your tags short, consistent, and use customer-specific terms.
Changes are automatically saved with a delay of approximately 500 milliseconds. The save replaces the tag lists for all data languages of the product with the same request, records the changed languages in the product history, and triggers a catalog cache refresh. If another change occurs at the same time, the page may request to reload the data. After the error message, verify the current tags before saving again.
Plan tag cleanup
Product tags only reveal spelling variations in separate table rows. First, select one target form, for example singular or plural, and change the old form for all products that use it. There is no renaming or merging function for the entire catalog on the summary page.
A list of three sample products is not enough to completely clean up a widely used tag. Export a CSV of product tags when you need all combinations of product SKU, language code, and tag list. Make a bulk change via a separate import preview and verify unknown SKUs and the proposed separation before committing.
Once the changes are made, return to the Product Tags page and check in both languages that the old spelling is no longer visible and that the usage of the new value is as expected. Please note the delay in updating the cache and search index before the final checkout of the online store.
Impact on online shopping
Product tags are stored language-specific and included in the online store's search index as a searchable field. In the current search index's field order, tags are after other product information, so don't assume they have a specific weight or ranking impact without separate search testing.
The online store's product information also forms a product highlight list from language-specific tags. The visible number and presentation style depend on the theme in use; the service's product information itself does not limit the list to three tags. Therefore, check the product page in the correct language and device width.
Using the master page or changing the language selection does not change the online store. Only a tag change saved in the product editor affects the next update of the search index and product information. Tags do not form a verified separate browsing filter in the current product list.
Good to know
Product Tags is a review view, not a centralized tag registry. A tag value is created by having it stored for at least one product and language. To completely remove a value, you must remove it from every product-language combination that uses it.
The Products count and up to three sample products in the dashboard are language-specific. Tags are listed alphabetically, not by usage. If necessary, browse all pages or use a CSV export before doing a large cleanup.
Keep tags customer-oriented, but verify search behavior with real queries. Consistent spelling alone does not guarantee better search results, and search uses product codes, names, descriptions, categories, and manufacturers in addition to tags.
