How do quantity steps and packaging sizes work?
You will learn how to define quantity steps and package sizes so that prices and minimums are displayed correctly in AI Commerce user interface.
Open product quantity and packaging settings
AI Commerce product quantity steps and packaging sizes are defined in the Products view. Open the product you want to edit and its Overview tab. The same section contains the fields Minimum quantity , Quantity step , Packaging size , and Packaging unit .
Changes are saved automatically after editing. Wait for the save to complete and then check the product page and shopping cart. The packaging unit is selected from the register, so it is not written as free text in the product information.
Specify the minimum quantity and quantity step
AI Commerce 's Minimum Quantity is the smallest quantity a customer can order. The shopping cart prevents a smaller quantity from being taken to the checkout. The Quantity Step determines the increment and decrement range in which the customer adjusts the quantity: Step 5 allows quantities of 5, 10, and 15, not quantities of 6 or 7.
For example, use the following combinations:
| Target | Minimum quantity | Quantity step | Quantities to be used in the shopping cart |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sold in batches of one hundred pieces | 1 | 100 | 100, 200, 300… |
| Minimum 50 copies, then every 10 copies | 50 | 10 | 50, 60, 70… |
| Full box of 10 pieces at a time | 10 | 10 | 10, 20, 30… |
Both fields must have a positive integer value. Minimum quantity and Quantity step are different rules: the first sets a lower limit, the second sets the allowed range of changes.
Specify packaging size and packaging unit
AI Commerce 's Package Size tells you how many basic units are in the package. For example, a five-liter paint can has a package size of 5. The Package Unit tells you the unit displayed in the online store price, such as liter, piece, or square meter.
Select the Packaging Unit from the existing registry. If a suitable unit does not exist, the administrator can create it in the Packaging Units view and add language-specific translations to it. An unknown packaging unit ID must be corrected to a valid registry value before saving the product.
Show packaging and unit price in the online store
AI Commerce 's packaging and unit price are displayed in the current e-commerce logic when the Quantity step is greater than 1, the Packaging size is greater than 1, and the Packaging unit is selected. If any of these conditions are missing, a separate packaging price presentation will not be generated by this logic.
For example, for a bag of 100 pieces, use the values Minimum quantity 100, Quantity step 100, Package size 100, and Package unit piece. The customer adds 100, 200, or 300 pieces to the cart, and the online store can display the packaging price and a complementary unit price.
For a tile or laminate product, specify the square footage of the package as the Package Size, select square meters as the Packaging Unit, and use the Quantity step that corresponds to the actual sales lot. This way, for example, the box price and the square meter price for easier comparison are based on the same product data.
Please note price accuracy and rounding.
AI Commerce 's price calculation precision depends on the Package Size. When the Package Size is greater than 1, the price calculation uses the maximum precision allowed by the currency; otherwise, two decimal places are used. A package size of 0 or an empty value is treated as size 1 in the online store's availability data.
This allows, for example, to handle a very small base unit price without always assuming a lower limit of 0.01 euros in the customer's instructions. Enter the product price and packaging information according to the actual sales unit of the business and check the final representation on the product page.
Check the most common uses
It is worth checking the most common uses of AI Commerce 's quantity and packaging settings with the following test cases:
- Quantity step only: Minimum quantity 1 and Quantity step 100. Try quantities 100, 200 and 300.
- Minimum and step together: Minimum quantity 50 and Quantity step 10. Try quantities 50, 60 and 70 and the forbidden quantity 55.
- Full box: Minimum quantity 10 and Quantity step 10. Try quantities 10, 20 and 30.
- Bag of 100 pieces: Minimum quantity, Quantity step and Pack size 100 and Packing unit piece.
- Pack of 1000: use the Minimum Quantity and Quantity Step that match the actual cart quantity, and the Pack Size 1000; check the product page to make sure the price basis and the quantity handled in the cart match.
Don't just test the price text on the product page. Add the product to the cart, test both allowed and prohibited quantities, and make sure the quantity, packaging price, and unit price refer to the same sales amount.
Choose one consistent sales model
AI Commerce 's consistent sales model uses Quantity Step for the amount handled by the shopping cart, Minimum Quantity for the lower limit, and Pack Size and Pack Unit for the basis and presentation of the price. Use the same model for products in the same product group so that the customer does not have to interpret unit, bag, box, and area pricing differently.
If the online store layout has been customized, verify the implementation impact with your UI partner. Product data values and calculation rules in the current core code must still be checked in the admin and shopping cart after each change.
