Attribute groups: group product data and control its order
The Attribute Sets view lets you group product attributes into named, organized sets that form the product information sections of a product page in an online store.
Purpose of attribute groups in product data
Attribute groups group product attributes into named, organized entities. The same group can be assigned directly to products or to multiple products through an attribute family. The name and order of the group can affect how the attributes marked as visible are grouped in the online store.
The group does not create new attributes, nor does it make them required, filterable, or visible in the online store. These properties are defined in the attribute or attribute family.
Browse attribute groups
Open Attribute Sets at /products/attribute-sets . The list displays the columns ID , Code , Name , Order , and Attributes . Open a group by selecting its ID or name.
Search for groups in the Search attribute groups field by code or name stored in any data language. The list is sorted by ID in ascending order. Paging uses a cursor, and the page size can be selected as the number provided by the user interface; the server accepts a maximum of 200 rows in a single request.
The Name of the list is displayed according to the data language of the administrator's user interface language. If that language does not have a name, the group code is used in the list. Attributes indicates the number of different attributes associated with the group.
Create an attribute group
Select New Attribute Group . Give the group a unique Code , an Order stored as an integer, and names for the available data languages. The code is required, up to 64 characters long, and unique; design it to be stable for integrations and CSV migrations.
You can attach attributes during creation. Select Attribute to add , use the Add attribute function, and arrange the selected attributes with the Move up and Move down functions. The same attribute can only appear once in a group.
Finally, select Save Group . The creation page does not automatically save any pending changes. After successful creation, the view will move to the new group editing page.
Edit code, names, and order
Attribute groups automatically save changes to Code , Order , language-specific name, and attribute list on the edit page. The change is scheduled approximately 500 milliseconds after the last input; exiting the text field will immediately trigger the pending save.
Please wait for the save to complete before making the next major change or leaving the page. If the save fails, the page displays an error message and a Retry option. Correct the field error before continuing; for example, code that is already in use will be rejected.
The lower Order value places the group before the higher value in e-commerce transactions that use the group order. The order of the attributes is separate: it is determined by the order in the Attached Attributes list.
Attach and organize attributes
Associated Attributes shows the attributes that belong to the group. Add a new one by selecting it from the drop-down menu and selecting Add Attribute . Remove membership by selecting Remove Attribute from the row. This detaches the attribute from the group; it does not remove the attribute from the attribute register or the stored value of the product directly.
Change the display order with the Move Up and Move Down functions. On the edit page, changing membership also uses autosave. The server replaces the group membership list with the saved list, so check the order as a whole after an error or retry.
Changing group membership clears the catalog cache of products that are directly or through an attribute family associated with the group. However, refreshing the cache does not change whether the attribute is populated with a product or marked as visible in the online store.
Use attribute groups in attribute families
An attribute family can contain multiple attribute groups. When a group is attached to a family and the family is saved, the family group list is materialized for the products that belong to the family. The order of the groups is first determined by the family membership order and then by the group's own order and code.
An attribute family can also define individual attributes and their channel-specific mandatoryness. So don't assume that all of its attributes are mandatory based on group membership. Check the family's Attributes tab for the actual mandatoryness and the values saved in the product editor.
Changing the same group can affect both products that use the group directly and products that are related through families. Assess the impact before detaching an attribute or renaming a large group.
Visibility in the online store
Attribute groups are stored in the e-commerce attribute cache as the group ID, language-specific name, and ordinal value of the attributes marked as visible. The product page can use this information to create titled property sections. The exact appearance depends on the e-commerce theme in use.
The mere existence of an attribute group does not make the section visible to the customer. Visibility requires that the group is used by the product, the attribute is marked as visible in the online store, and the product has a value to display. An empty language-specific group name can lead to a missing or unclear title, so fill in the names for all available store languages.
After the change, please check the actual product page in the correct language and domain. The order in the management list is ID order and not a direct preview of the group order that the customer sees.
Delete attribute group
Open the group to be deleted, select Delete group and confirm the deletion. The service prevents the deletion if it finds products related to the group directly or through an attribute family. Detach the group from products and families and materialize family changes before the new attempt.
Deletion deletes the group names and attribute memberships along with the group. The attributes themselves remain in the attribute register. The deletion prevention message only shows that the group is in use; it does not provide a breakdown of where it is used, so check the product and attribute family views for the impact.
If a group is associated with an empty attribute family, product-based blocking may not be useful. Also, remove this family association before deleting to avoid conflicts between the family structure and the group register.
Good to know
Attribute groups are a common catalog structure, so changes can have a broad impact. Create groups with a clear purpose, keep codes stable, and use customer-friendly names in all business languages.
Group Order controls the order of groups, while Membership List Order controls the placement of attributes within a group. Attribute visibility, filterability, and mandatory are separate settings.
The edit page saves automatically, but the create page requires the Save Group function. Check success before leaving the page and ensure extensive changes are also made on the online store product page.
